This Is How You Actually Handle Emotional People!
“Can you be calm?” or “Hey, relax.”
Have you ever noticed how hearing that almost never helps?
Most of the time, being told to calm down does the opposite. Something tightens inside. It feels controlling, not supportive, like someone is trying to manage your emotions when your nervous system is already overwhelmed. And when that happens, escalation isn’t a choice; it’s a reaction to feeling unseen or dismissed.
So let’s reframe what calm actually is.
Calm isn’t an action you can command.
Calm is a feeling your body arrives at when it feels safe.
True calm comes when the nervous system settles, when breathing slows, and the body regulates. In heated conversations, that may not happen instantly. Emotional regulation is important; we don’t want to hurt others, and yes, taking a few slow, deep breaths can help. Later, I’ll share a breathing technique that works especially fast.
